CNC/Retrofitting
Why Retrofit?
GOOD IRON BUT BAD CONTROLS?
If you have a solid machine with old and troublesome controls, a PLC Retrofit may be in your best interest. to implement
this soultion, Scott Machinery will replace most of the relays and timers in the control panel with a programmable Logic
Controller. Dependable operation and low maintenance will increase the machine's poductivity and your profit.
OLD NC KEEPING YOU DOWN?
Speaking of troublesome controls, nothing is more costly than an old Numerical Controller with high downtime and low
capability. Let Scott Machinery replace your NC dinosaur with a Computerized Numerical Controller. Replace high
maintenance with performance and accurate machining.
What Scott Machinery Can Do
- Replace the controller
Scott Machinery can replace (or install) a new CNC control tailored to fit you machine. As authorized retrofitters
for GE fanuc, Allen-Bradley, and Autocon/Dynapath, there is a control to fit your machie and budget. For the PLC retrofit,
we can supply Allen-Badley SLC-500 and PLC Direct.
- Design the Interface
With a new CNC, of course, comes the need to interface it with the machine, and the engineers at Scott Machinery can design
the electrical interface and write the ladder software, incorporating standard CNC pratices, or accomodate the control to
your own corporate CNC culture. Additionally, we incorporate ScottSafe TM Emergency stop technology, providing the
advantages of an electronic fault finder with the safety of magnetic controls.
- Replace the operator panel
The operator's panel that supplements the CNC panel (primarily to accomodate manual functions) generally has to be
replaced also. This is called the MTB, or Machine Tool Builders panel. GE Fanuc and Allen-Bradley provide a pre-built
MTB that can be programmed to accomplish the nessacary functions. Autocon requires a seperate pushbutton station. Either
way, Scott Machinery can engineer an MTB to match your machine.
- Replace the magnetic controls
Over a long period of time, a magnetics cabinet evolves into a patchwork of wires, jumpers, and mismatched components.
Additionally, a new control can usually reduce the number of contracts and relays required. In most cases, we suggest
that you replace your wiring grapevine with a custom built magnetic panel from Scott Machinery.
- Replace the control cabinet
Many times, Scott can just replace the sub panel in the existing control cabinet. If the cabinet is in bad condition,
however, or it is much bigger than is needed for the new control system, then a new cabinet will improve the looks and
functionality of the machine floor plan. Scott Machinery can design and install a new cabinet along with the new magnetics.
- Replace the servo motors and/or amplifiers
Let the experts at Scott determine if the existing servos are worth re-using and can be interfaced with the new controls
system. If not, modern servo motors and amplifiers are smaller, more powerful, and much easier to maintain. Scott machinery
can size and install a new servo system.
- Replace the spindle motor drive
One of the most troublesome cpmponents of older controls is the spindle drive, especially DC drives. A new spindle drive
may be a major step in reducing control downtime. Compactness, safety, and digital programming could put an end to your
big motor control woes.
- Provide Documentation
ScottDoc TM is Scott machinery's unique documentation process that provides the industry's best documentation personnel
who must maintain the machine tool. All details of the interface are clearly laid out on readable and reproducible copy.
In addition to technical manuals, we provide ScottDoc TM manuals for the mahine operator, outlining the functions of the
MTB. We also, of course, furnish the Operator's Manual provided by the manufacturer of the control.
- Provide training
Scott Machinery makes no secret of their strategies regarding the machine tool retrofit, and is willing to train
maintenance supervision and other personnel on-site. We can provide a thorough orientation of the control and other
components, and provide instruction for troubleshooting and general maintenance.
- Provide after-installation support
When the retrofit is finished, and production begins, you can be assured that Scott Machinery will be available, as we
have been for fifty years. Whatever it takes to keep you satisfied is what we'll do, whether it's providing telephone
support, sending a technician, or making a program change. The Scott Machinery retrofit team is dedicated to quality
and professionalism. Let us be your machine tool and controls resource.
